Dr. Altaf Taher

Biography

Dr. Altaf Taher is currently the Divisional Chief of Pathology at Eastern Health in St. John’s, Canada. He is also employed by the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He serves as the Program Director of the Residency Training Program in Anatomical Pathology. Altaf received his medical degree from JNMC College in Belgaum, India, and went on to do his specialization in Pathology from Kasturba Medical College in Mangalore, India in 1990. After practicing pathology for more than a decade he immigrated to Canada where he was recertified by the Royal College of Physicians of Canada in 2008. He subsequently was a fellow in the Gastrointestinal Pathology division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston from 2009 to 2010. He also received certification from the American Board of Pathology in 2010. He joined Memorial University as an Assistant Professor in 2009. He became the Residency Program Director in 2014. He has proven skills as a leader and became the Divisional Chief of Pathology in 2016. His interests are mainly in education and he teaches both at the undergraduate and post graduate levels. His specialization in Gastrointestinal Pathology has made him one of the few pathologists with a special interest in pancreatic-biliary pathology in the entire province of Newfoundland.
